Our Week at a Glance

Students have been working hard in the best class! We have been perfecting our routines, learning how to collaborate with others in a meaningful way, growing as real readers, and becoming amazing mathematicians!

Ask Your Child About…

  • Real reading vs. fake reading;
  • metacognition (thinking about our thinking);
  • schema (background knowledge. We use this to make connections in our reading, writing, and speaking);
  • inferring;
  • their favorite math strategy when solving for addition
  • picture of the day

Literacy

This week in reading, we’re exploring a nonfiction book entitled, “Two Bobbies.” Students practice making predictions, inferences, and identify theme with their thinking partners.  We’re also practicing describing character traits and how their actions affect the events of a story.

We Finished our First Novel!

I am happy (and a bit sad) to announce we finished our first third grade novel, “Charlotte’s Web.” The kiddos have enjoyed reading this book as they have practiced visualizing and analyzing character traits, as well as their actions. Students reflected on their thoughts of this book using thinking stems. I am excited to begin a new novel!

Writing

One amazing aspect of being in the Best class is the opportunity to write FREELY. Since  the first week of school, students have had the freedom to choose what kind of writing they want to do on a daily basis. Then, when we share, students practice identifying their type of writing. Most of my students choose to write personal narratives.  This week, we have started the revision process focusing on word choice. Students were introduced to a thesaurus and had a great time navigating http://www.wordcentral.com, which is an online dictionary/thesaurus resource. Students chose 3 “RIP” words and replaced them with “purple words.”

Science/Social Studies

We are exploring the scientific process, focusing on how to make observations. Our picture of the day helped us with this skill. In Social Studies, we’ll be continuing our exploration of the world around us using maps, and how to be safe citizens on the internet.

This week is not over, so we will continue to practice all of these wonderful skills.

So much is happening in the Best Class! Make sure to check out our instagram for fabulous pictures of the BEST students working hard!
